Joyce Meyer: A Modern Day Joseph

Most of you have probably heard of Joyce Meyer, and may have heard her teach or read her books. She’s now in her mid-seventies and is founder and heads of one of the biggest ministries in the world. How did a woman with only secondary school education, who was married and divorced with one child by her early twenties, and who was sexually abused and raped by her father hundreds of times from when she was a very small child till she left home at age 18, become so mightily used of God today?

She left home as soon as she could get away and married a man who repeatedly committed adultery, was a thief and he ended up being sent to prison. After that marriage ended she married Dave Meyer, a godly Christian man who adopted her son and they had three more children. As you can imagine, Joyce was very damaged from all the years of verbal, emotional and sexual abuse. She was very difficult to get along with and her emotions and life were a mess.

Joyce credits her husband Dave as the person God used to model Christlikeness and stability before her, until she cried out to God to help her change and heal her wounds. God then called her to teach and she stepped out in obedience as mother of four young kids. He led her one step at a time until today her ministry expands all over the world and she has written dozens and dozens of books!

And just like Joseph, Joyce ended up feeding and taking care of those who had treated her so badly. Further to what her dad did, her mother knew what he was doing but never stopped it or protected her. In obedience to God she moved her parents from where they lived to the town where she lived, bought them a house and hired staff to care for them till they died. She never had a good relationship with her father because he never saw what he did to her as wrong. Nevertheless, Joyce forgave him and took care of him until shortly before his death he finally asked her to forgive him. She led him to Christ and she and her husband baptized him in water! She said caring for her parents was one of the most powerful things she ever did and made a big difference in her life and ministry.

Her story is a living witness of how God can restore even the most wounded soul and messed up life if we trust Him and obey Him. Today Joyce testifies that what the devil meant for evil to destroy her through her dad, God has truly used to advance her and make her a blessing to help and heal millions – all things have indeed worked together for her good! There are many of us running around today, victims of all sorts of pain, but we too can rise above it all like Joseph and Joyce.

The lyrics of this powerful song “Intentional” by Travis Greene are so fitting here. Listen and be blessed.

Intentional – Travis Greene

All things are working for my good
‘Cause He’s intentional
Never failing
I know that all things are working for my good
He’s intentional
Never failing

All things are working
All things are working for my good
‘Cause He’s intentional
He’s intentional
And He’s never failing, never failing

All things are working for my good
All things are working for my good
He’s intentional
He’s intentional
He’s never failing, never failing

All things are working
All things are working for my good,
I know that all things are working for my good
All things are working for my good
I know that all things are working for my good
All things are working for my good
All things are working for my good
All things are working for my good

Alright, hands up, sing!
Oh, oh, oh.
We can smile ’cause we know it’s working
Oh, oh, oh.

Through the hurt and the pain
I know it’s working for my good
I know it’s working for my good
This my part

I don’t have to worry
‘Cause it’s working for me
It’s working for me
And I believe it’s working for me

I can smile again
And I don’t have to worry
‘Cause it’s working for me
It’s working for me
It’s working for me

Come on! Sing that! I will say that…

I don’t have to worry
‘Cause it’s working for me, yeah,
it’s working for me
It’s working for me
It’s working for me
And I can hold my head up
It’s working for me

Get your confidence back

Sing I don’t have to worry
I don’t have to worry
‘Cause it’s working for me
It’s working for me
My faith is rising now
It’s working for me
And although I can’t see how
it’s working for me

I know that He’s intentional

He’s intentional
Yes He is
He’s intentional
He’s been doing it for a long time
He’s intentional
He’s been doing it for a long time
He’s intentional
I’ll be giving my trust now

He’s intentional
I’ll be giving my praise now
He’s intentional
He’s intentional
He’s intentional
And He’s never failing
Never failing
