The revelation of God in the Bible is progressive. That means that as you read from Genesis to the New Testament, you will find that more and more of God – His nature and His will – is being revealed to man. So, David knew more about God than people in Abraham’s time. People in the time of Hezekiah knew more about God than David did. In the New Testament, those who were with Jesus knew more about God than people in Hezekiah’s time. The people who experienced Pentecost knew more about God than even those who saw Jesus in the flesh. And today, we in the church know much more about God than those before us.
Many of the false doctrines around result from picking something from the Old Testament which is not supported concretely by New Testament scripture. We don’t develop doctrines from the Old Testament. Rather, church doctrines are developed from the New Testament, while the Old Testament is used to corroborate what the New Testament teaches. Never forget that we are living under the New Covenant, not the Old Covenant.
There is a devil out there who knows more Bible than many Christians. You must know the Bible so well that when the devil comes with his lies, you will be able to recognize his deception. That’s what Jesus did when Satan came quoting scripture out of context in order to tempt Him. Jesus successfully resisted him with the Word of God.
